Gender Roles

Gender roles, norms, and expectations vary across cultures and societies. In some cases, the specific responsibilities and gender roles we are familiar with, such as  the specific responsibilities and expectations associated with being a man or woman can differ greatly from one culture to another. For example, in some cultures, women are expected to be highly involved in paid work outside the home, while in others, it is considered inappropriate for women to work outside the home. Similarly, traditional gender roles may be more rigid in some cultures, while in others, they are more fluid and open to change. It is important to keep in mind that gender roles are shaped by a variety of factors, including cultural, historical, economic, and political factors, and can change over time. These different perspectives can have a significant impact on the experiences when studying abroad. Here are a few points to consider:

  1. Cultural attitudes: Research the cultural attitudes towards gender and gender roles in the host country. What are the norms and expectations surrounding femininity and masculinity? Are there rigid or fluid definitions of gender?
  2. Social norms: Be aware of the social norms and expectations regarding gender in the host country. For example, some cultures may have traditional gender roles and expectations for behavior, dress, and relationships.
  3. Language: Familiarize yourself with the language used to describe gender and gender roles in the host country. This can help you navigate cultural differences and understand how gender is perceived and expressed.
  4. Workplace dynamics: Consider how gender may impact the workplace culture in the host country. Is there gender-based discrimination or bias in certain industries or positions?
  5. Education: Research the attitudes towards education and academic achievement in the host country, and how they may vary by gender.
  6. Relationships: Be aware of the cultural attitudes towards romantic and sexual relationships in the host country, and how they may vary by gender.
