My name is Lukas Remeika and I am a senior at California Lutheran University who is majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance. During winter break I attended the South East Asia Winter Seminar with seventeen other students from different universities and had the privilege to gain a better understanding of the business environment throughout the world. While growing up in California, I have always sought a new adventure to test the limits of how far I will go to try something new and learn to make use of obstacles encountered to get there. Having grown up in a Lithuanian family, I have had the privilege to visit Europe and meet new people which sparked the inner adventurer in me. Throughout the years I have taken a road trip around the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and I have also taken the Pacific Coast Highway all the way up to Vancouver Canada. With finance being a necessity for businesses and families around the world, I hope to help many people achieve their financial goals and continue exploring with me.

What did you learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience taught me an important lesson about economic development in second world countries. Although we may believe they are reliant on well-developed first world countries, we are reliant on them as well. Society is consistently developing through new innovations where resources are widespread throughout the world. Each country has some sort of product or workforce that may be beneficial for a separate country and if we learn to understand what these tradeoffs are, we may better understand how tariffs and trade wars may benefit others. Regardless of the flights and adjusting in my schedule, this experience was beneficial towards my career in business and understanding of people throughout the world.
Being able to travel to multiple cities and countries, what travel advice do you have for future students?
Many students may not have traveled to developing countries or outside of the United States and may worry about having to adapt quickly. One of the many lessons I learned was not to worry about the information that you may think you are lacking in different countries and their customs. People throughout the world are much the same when it comes to ethics and respecting each other. When traveling abroad it is important to maintain your manners and treat others the way you may want to be treated.
Do you intend on interning/working abroad in the future – if so, what did you learn from your seminar that will help you work/live abroad?
If I to work abroad, one of the most important lessons that IBS taught me was to not only look into the area I would be located in online but to also go out and explore the area myself. What we see in movies and through images in social media are not always the same images of what we may see in real life. We can judge an area by its looks, but we must also attempt to judge an area by exploring and trying to live through it as well.
